Chemical / Environmental Safety / Hazardous Substances

About the Courses

Protecting workers from chemical and environmental hazards is a legal and moral responsibility for every employer in Ireland. Our Chemical / Environmental Safety Training programmes help organisations across Ireland meet legal requirements, protect workers, and reduce risks from hazardous substances and explosive atmospheres. All courses are designed around Irish Health & Safety Authority (HSA) guidelines, the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act, and relevant EU Directives such as REACH and ATEX.

Whether you work in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, construction, laboratories, or oil & gas, our courses are tailored to reduce workplace risks, improve compliance, and safeguard employee health.

Courses We Offer

Certification

  • On successful completion, participants are awarded a Silica Dust Awareness Certificate valid for 5 years

  • Ideal participants may already hold a training qualification (e.g. QQI Level 6 or equivalent) if intending to train others

3. Safe Chemical Handling & Awareness Training

Every workplace where chemicals are stored, handled, or used must ensure workers understand risks, control measures, and legal responsibilities. Our Chemicals in the Workplace Training is designed to equip employees and supervisors with the practical knowledge and awareness needed to manage chemical hazards and maintain compliance with Irish health & safety regulations and EU chemical laws (e.g. CLP, REACH).

Course Modules & Key Topics

Module 1 : Chemical Hazards & Health Effects

    • Recognising chemical hazard types (toxic, corrosive, irritants, flammables)

    • Long-term and short-term health impacts

    • Routes of exposure (inhalation, skin contact, ingestion)

    • Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), exposure limits, and legal limits

Module 2: Labels, Safety Data Sheets & Classification

    • Interpreting CLP / GHS pictograms and hazard statements

    • Understanding Safety Data Sheets (SDS): sections, uses, limits

    • Label requirements under EU / Irish regulations

    • How to select, read, and act on SDS information

Module 3 : Risk Assessment & Control Strategies

    • Conducting chemical risk assessments

    • Hierarchy of controls (elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls)

    • Safe storage, segregation of incompatible chemicals

    • Ventilation systems, fume hoods, containment

Module 4 : Safe Handling, PPE, Spill Response & Emergencies

    • Correct selection and use of Personal Protective Equipment

    • Handling procedures: transfer, dilution, mixing, decanting

    • Spill management, containment, neutralisation

    • Emergency plans, first aid, evacuation, incident reporting

Module 5 : Practical Examples, Exercises & Case Studies

  • Real-world scenarios from Irish / EU workplaces

  • Group exercises on choosing controls and responses

  • Review of common mistakes and root causes

  • Tools and checklists for daily operations

Who Should Attend?

This training is suitable for:

  • Workers who regularly handle or use chemicals (e.g. production, cleaning, maintenance)
  • Laboratory technicians, quality control staff, R&D employees
  • Janitorial, maintenance, or hygiene teams using cleaning agents
  • Supervisors, safety officers, and managers overseeing chemical use
  • Health & Safety representatives and internal auditors

Certification

On successful completion, attendees receive a “Chemical Safety Awareness Certificate” (valid for a defined period, e.g. 3–5 years)

4. ATEX / Explosive Atmosphere Training

Working in environments where flammable gases, vapours, or combustible dust may be present carries serious risks. Our ATEX / Explosive Atmosphere Training in Ireland is designed to equip participants with essential knowledge of the ATEX Directives, hazard recognition, and risk mitigation strategies to operate safely in potentially explosive zones.
